Gary Cahill discusses the make-up of our defence last night including a small difference to the position he is used to playing.
The England defender has started each and every Premier League game alongside John Terry but on three occasions in cup competitions he has now lined up next to Kurt Zouma at the heart of our defence, with the pair impressing against Sporting Lisbon yesterday.
Cahill explained what differs when the young French defender is his partner at the back.
‘I’ve played with Kurt a few times now and it has always gone well,’ he said. ‘I move over to the left side which changes the picture slightly in terms of my positioning and my outlook, but it doesn’t really change anything in what I’m doing as a defender.
‘It’s like anything, you play a few games there and you adapt to it. When I play with JT he’s always on the left but I’ve had a few games there now when I’ve played with Kurt and it’s been fine. I thought he played well as did the rest of the squad.’
Elsewhere at the back last night Cesar Azpilicueta shifted to right-back with Filipe Luis coming in on the left for his fifth Champions League appearance of the season and his 50th in UEFA competitions.
‘There’s a lot of quality there and we’re all experienced in our own right,’ assessed Cahill when asked about the structure of last night’s defence.
‘They have all played in the Champions League, obviously Kurt less so but they have the experience of playing in different leagues in Europe and against opposition from around the continent. It’s great to work with these guys.
‘We switched the back four a bit and apart from the goal we conceded I thought it went really well and we worked well together. It was a pleasing night all round really. Of course the pressure was off but it was nice to get the win.’
